EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
