Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Between Music Fans

Marking 20 years since Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to become rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that anyone who's mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the feel of an authentic performance.

The studio previously tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a significant impact for many of the artists included, introducing classic groups to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the music they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group one featured act included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game revived classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, however once it got featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated tag. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album remained unreleased in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band more money than any of their studio albums. It moved well over half a million copies in its first week, and sales of their songs rose significantly during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and go to war,” notes musician the artist.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a successful tour before their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked overshadow all other the band has done. Recently, the song was used in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, be it for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to do it”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, with set to be a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden where you can update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist for future fans.”
